Online Workshop: Rewriting The Narrative

When it comes to outdoor education or nature-based education, the default is the Eurocentric experience. As educators and administrators, how do we address that and create curricula and/or programming that is authentic, engaging, and enriching for all children and families involved? In this 3-hour workshop, Rewriting The Narrative: How to Center Non-White Children in Your Nature-Based Education Curriculum Design, join Dr. Deja Jones from Honeypot Montessori and Ashley Causey-Golden from Gather Forest School and Afrocentric Montessori to learn how to design curricula that center the global majority's cultures and identities.

In this interactive session, participants will:

  • Learn how to evaluate their current curricula/programs using the Connectedness to Nature Scale to assess children's connections to nature. Participants will practice making this tool child-friendly and analyze sample data.
  • Explore Dr. Gholdy Muhammad's four-part equity framework and apply it to develop a sample nature-based lesson plan that amplifies non-White voices and perspectives.
  • Engage in discussions and activities to rewrite dominant narratives and intentionally center global majority cultures when designing nature curricula.
  • Leave with practical strategies, tools, and an action plan to make their nature education more inclusive and affirming for children of the global majority.
