Who is this conference for?
The Nature-Based Early Learning Conference brings professionals together to explore and promote nature-based learning for young children. Attendees include teachers, program administrators, higher education faculty, researchers, education consultants, landscape designers, and others who are committed to or interested in bringing nature, outdoor learning, and environmental education to young children’s education. The program focuses on nature-based education for preschoolers (ages 3-5), early elementary students (ages 5-8), and infants and toddlers (ages 0-3). Professionals, parents, and caregivers who are just learning about a nature-based approach to education, or may be interested in starting a nature-based early education program, are welcome.
When and where will the 2022 Nature-Based Early Learning Conference be held?
The 2022 Nature-Based Early Learning Conference will be held in Cincinnati, Ohio at the Graduate Cincinnati Hotel. In-person events will take place between Wednesday, July 27, and Saturday, July 30. Most sessions will be scheduled between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time.
The online conference will include live events from Wednesday, July 27 - Friday, July 29. On-demand sessions will be available until July 2023.
When can I register?
What does my registration include?
In-person: Your registration for the in-person conference includes a welcome reception on Wednesday evening (including food and drinks); plenaries, sessions, breakfast on Thursday and Friday, coffee & tea, and lunch on Thursday and Friday; and access to all online, on-demand conference sessions until July 2023. Registration for the in-person conference is $385.
Online: Your registration for the online conference includes access to all online, on-demand sessions until July 2023 as well as several live online sessions, including but not limited to live-streamed plenary sessions on Thursday and Friday, July 28-29. Registration for the online conference is $95.
Are group discounts available?
Yes! Programs registering 4 or more participants receive a 15% discount on each registration. If you would like to register multiple attendees from the same program, institution, or business for the online event, call 202-419-0412 for assistance. Discounts are automatically applied to in-person group registrations.
Do you offer financial aid for conference attendees or discounted pricing for students?
Unfortunately, we do not have a financial aid program for the conference, as the conference registration fee is already subsidized through grants, sponsorships, and lots of volunteer time. We do our best every year to make the experience as affordable as possible.
Do presenters have to pay registration fees?
Yes, all in-person and online presenters are required to register for the respective conference at which they are presenting. Presenters are given a scholarship to participate in the conference and a discount code is provided for registration. All presenters are required to register by June 1, 2022.
Can I earn graduate credits for participating in the conference?
Yes, graduate credits for participating in the conference (2 credits) are available through Hamline University and may be used toward a certificate in nature-based early learning or toward a Master's degree in environmental education. Contact Patty Born Selly at [email protected] to learn more.
Can I still access the 2021 Conference sessions?
No, access to the 2021 Conference content expired July 1, 2022.
What does my registration include?
Your registration for the in-person conference includes a welcome reception on Wednesday evening (including food and a cash bar); plenaries, sessions, breakfast on Thursday and Friday, coffee & tea, and lunch on Thursday and Friday; and access to all online, on-demand conference sessions until July 2023. Registration for the in-person conference is $385. Add-on events, such as workshops, field trips, and networking events, are also available for additional fees.
Where should I stay?
Natural Start is holding a room block at the Graduate Cincinnati, which is also the conference venue. Book a room at a discounted rate of $139/night by following this link or by calling 844-888-4723 and asking for the Natural Start Alliance Annual Conference rate. This rate applies to stays July 27-July 31.
To take advantage of the discounted rate, you must book your room by July 7, 2022.
What protocols do you have in place to ensure a safe conference?

Will I receive a professional development certificate at the conclusion of the conference?
Yes, you will receive a signed, printed certificate for the number of professional development hours offered during the conference as well as separate certificates for any optional workshops or field trips you attended. You can also download certificates for on-demand sessions you view on the online conference platform.

What is the best way to get to the conference venue?
Cincinnati is located within a day's drive of about half of the country’s total populace.
If driving, the hotel has a conveniently located covered parking structure on-site. Self-parking is available for $10 per night. Daytime parking exceeding four hours is available for $10.
If you are traveling from farther away, the closest airport is the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), located a 30-minute drive from Graduate Cincinnati. This hotel does not provide shuttle service.
What should I wear to the conference?
We recommend that you dress comfortably and bring layers. There will be indoor and outdoor sessions during every session block. Site tours of nature-based programs are offered on July 30 and include significant time outdoors. The weather in Cincinnati is typically in the 70’s-80’s in late July, but it’s always good to come prepared for the unexpected!
Can I drive my own car during site visits on Saturday?
No, unfortunately our event insurance does not allow individuals to drive themselves to site visit locations. This can also create logistical difficulties if the featured programs do not have parking lots large enough to accommodate individual cars in addition to our coach bus.
What kind of transportation do you provide for off-site events?
If transportation is included in your off-site event, motor coaches will be provided.
What is the cancellation and refund policy?
Conference registration and field trip fee refunds are determined by the date of cancellation. Cancellations made on or before June 30, 2022 will receive a 90% refund. Cancellations made on or before July 12, 2022 will receive a 50% refund. Refunds are not available after July 12, 2022.
Please note that we must reach minimum attendance to run each optional add-on event; a refund for the cost of the event will be given if we are forced to cancel. Refunds issued by credit card will be processed immediately, refunds issued by check will be processed after the event. Please e-mail inquiries regarding refunds to [email protected].

What does my registration include?

Is there a pay-what-you-can option for the online conference?
The online conference fee reflects a discounted price for all participants. Therefore, we are unable to offer a flexible payment option this year.

View a list of session titles, presenters, and descriptions for the online conference here. As a registered attendee, you can access on-demand sessions in the Session Gallery and live sessions in the Live Schedule.
When will access to sessions begin?
Access to on-demand sessions begins in July. The conference is available for a year, with 24/7 on-demand access to all sessions until July 2023.
Can I share my registration with my colleagues?
Each attendee must register separately, and registrations cannot be shared. In addition, professional development certificates can only be generated associated with the name on your account. All participants should register, log in to the conference website, and view sessions exclusively on session pages.
Can I use on-demand sessions for training purposes?
You are welcome to use on-demand content for training your own staff or program. Any other use of sessions requires permission from Natural Start/NAAEE. Sessions can not be downloaded, shared, sold, or used in any other way without permission from Natural Start/NAAEE and the presenter.
Can I get a professional development certificate for the sessions that I participate in?
Yes! After you’ve viewed a session, you can download a certificate that indicates the session title and clock-hours for the session. The certificate includes the name associated with your registration account, so be sure to use the name that you want printed on your certificate when you register.
Are accessibility accommodations available?
Yes! We will be providing captioning for all of our live online sessions and we’re working with presenters to ensure that their materials are as accessible as possible. We may be able to provide ASL translation services if needed, but we do need advanced notice so that translators can be secured. You can indicate your accessibility needs on the registration form and we will do our very best to accommodate them, and we encourage you to also alert us via email if you would like to discuss accommodations.
