Online Workshop: Core Routines for Resilience
Access to this workshop is included with registration.
Educators are not surprised to hear that 20% of American children have a diagnosable mental, emotional, or behavioral disorder. Nor are they surprised that the National Institute of Health indicates that childhood anxiety disorders are very common–affecting one in eight children–and that they often interfere with social, emotional, and academic development. These numbers alone are startling, but they don’t account for the impact this dysregulation can have on an entire class.
Nicole Thurrell of Wild Med is returning for her second year at the annual Nature-Based Early Learning Conference, presenting Core Routines for Resilience, a module from her signature Wilderness Mental Health First Responder Course.
In this 2-hour interactive session, participants will:
- Learn strategies to pre-empt states of activation beyond which children and adults alike can reasonably cope
- Discover activities that can be used in outdoor programming to soothe, organize, and regulate the nervous system
- Build a toolkit of coping strategies and ways of interacting with people who are dysregulated to most effectively help them stabilize
Even, and especially, those not trained as mental health professionals should have access to this knowledge and these techniques. Educators in particular are uniquely suited to identify, respond, and support children experiencing dysregulation. Additionally, educators can learn to regulate themselves in these times of stress and uncertainty. Their own effective regulation, along with the rapport and proximity already established, stands to have a profound impact both on the child’s immediate and long-term ability to cope in the world.
**Instructor will provide a brief review of material taught in the Natural Start Wilderness Mental Health First Responder Intro Webinar, and then progress to new material.
